The friendship between Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor spanned decades. Starting out carefully on the phone, because Michael was more comfortable that way, it turned into something so strong and so special that it would last their whole life through.
Our childhood shapes all of us, but when it is stolen from us, it shapes us even more. For the two of them, childhood didn't equal birthdays, basketball and friends. For the two of them, childhood equaled hard work, expectation, and the greed of adults that would only love you when you delivered the way they expected you to. This is something none of us on the outside could every fully understand. It is something that you can only truly understand the damaging effects of if you have lived it, and it is also through sharing your pain with someone that truly understands it that a true connection is established .
Elizabeth Taylor spoke of Michael often, and once said that she "doesn't think people understand how much they truly love eachother." Intensely, completely, and with the purity and innocence of the many children they both invited into Michael's Neverland, they shared each other's lives, and their connection is something I don't think could ever be explained in words, as much as they would praise eachother.
Everyone in this world have people they care about, and a part of that, is feeling whatever they do. We're happy for them when things go well, and we hurt for them when things don't go the way they planned. For Elizabeth, this was particularly true in the way that she was forced to watch someone closer to her than her own heart suffer, inhumanely, for decades. She watched a friend and someone who would never raise his voice be lied about, accused, and viciously attacked by an entire world. I am sure many nights were spent trying to soothe an calm his soul, and she fought tirelessly and passionately to clear his name. Because that's what friends do. They pick you up when you fall down and can't keep walking; they throw your arm around their neck, and they carry you,
drag you if they have to, until you have come through your trials and tribulations safely on the other side. They cover your heart with theirs, they come running when you call, and most of all...they know the real you. In spite of facades, a million "I'm okay"'s and little white lies told by us to spare them worry...they see us. They see us, as we really are; perfect in all our imperfections, and they accept us. Fully, unconditionally, and with no strings attached, they share your life and everything in it, simply because you're you.
When you're the most famous person in the world and constantly have to defend yourself against the tabloids and lies of the world, that kind of relationship is difficult to establish. A person can only take so much before their trust in other people is forever damaged. But slowly, two hearts were opened to one another, and two people learned to share their laughter and their pain throughout everything the world would throw at them. Mockery couldn't touch them, lies couldn't touch them, and fabrication couldn't touch them. Because they had eachother, and they knew: "my heart is your heart, and whatever happens, I won't let go of your hand. My life is yours, my soul is yours, and I offer you everything I am. See me in all my imperfection, and love me anyway. Because life is bigger than what the world will throw at us to try to bring us down, and I am more than who they try to make me out to be." They had eachother, and through gut-wrenching pain and childlike innocence and happiness, they saw the key to what makes our time on this planet worth the effort. They saw...and they knew.
This world is not an easy place to live in. It can be cold, complicated, and scary, and people will hurt you if they can, simply because they're scared too. But if through all of it, you manage to find just one person that will tell you you can when everyone else says you can't...you're on to something. If you can find someone that makes you willing to ask the question, "will you accept me for who I am and not try to change me into who you would like me to be", someone that will tell you the truth without hurting your feelings, and who will fight for you with dignity and respect when you cannot because you are only human...you have seen a glimpse of what it's all about. If in this life, you can let your guard down once after having been hurt repeatedly, if you can still see the possibility of gaining understanding and tolerance for all that you are...it's worth it.
It is. Because as someone very special once penned down on paper late one night up on the branches of his Giving Tree:
"In our darkest hour, in my deepest despair
Will you still care, will you be there?
In my trials, and my tribulations
Through my doubts, and frustrations
In my violence, and my turbulence
Through my fear, and my confessions
In my anguish, and my pain
Through my joy, and my sorrow
In the promise of another tomorrow...
I'll never let you part
For you're always...in my heart."
........
You were two of the most special people on this Earth. I looked to the sky today, and I could see him waiting for you. He is there, and he is waiting. Go now, and don't look back. Your heart is his, his is yours...and you are finally together. Thank you for everything you did, and for showing us what this life is all about. I will honor and remember you both in gratitude and respect for as long as I live. We miss you.
